Daly City

I am from the Bay Area and I have always known Daly City to be full of Filipinos. This article solidified this fact for me because I've never actually visited Daly City. Even though I am not from there, I found some similarities to it compared to my hometown, Palo Alto. It said that it was actually only 30% Filipino but if most people had to take a guess, they would say 60-80% Filipino. In Palo Alto (especially my high school) I felt like there were way more Asians (Indians and Chinese people) than caucasian people. When I actually looked at the numbers it was less than 40% Asian which actually shocked me.

In the reading it also mentioned that Daly City is very diverse because of the abundance of Filipino people. I would disagree. To my understanding, diverse means: showing a great deal of variety; very different. If the majority of people that you see in that particular city are Filipino, then is it actually diverse? (as a city itself not compared to America?). As a half-chinese half-white person I actually felt like an outsider at my high school just because there were SO many asians. I felt like I was the one who was different. I understand that compared to America, people of these cultures feel like a minority, but I believe that with the increasing number of them in confined, crowded areas, they are actually becoming the majority. Because of this majority status that they now hold, I don’t think it is fair to classify them as minority. I of course am somewhat a part of this group and I understand that I am also somewhat contradicting my own culture. However, I do feel that at some point they need to realize that maybe they are the ones excluding themselves from American culture.
