betrayal, class fantasies, and the Filipino nation in Daly City
In the reading, Betrayal, class fantasies, and the Filipino nation in Daly city, the breakdown of Filipino culture and its references to the Philippines is shown through the aspect of Daly city aka little manila. In the section, Filipino class division in Daly city, the Filipino community is separated by class, citizenship, and immigration. Due to the immigration of Filipinos from the Philippines, the Filipino communities have been viewed with a homogenized view that they are middle class and successful. This view of middle class and successful Filipinos is proven untrue by the fact that the Filipino community is taking jobs below their education level. The jobs include jobs such as babysitters, house cleaners, fast food workers. While parts of the community are educated, they are taking these jobs to make a living. In the reading, the author points out that the view of Daly City and American Filipinos from the Philippines is that everyone is middle class with a good amount of money. The image of the poor Filipino communities is not something projected to the world however it is a thing that cause a division in communities. Although the household income between the Filipinos and the Americans, the household income is higher in the Filipino household, this is because the Filipinos on average have more people per household than the average American household. Therefore the increased income is only due to increased amount of people per household. The ideal type of Filipino person is used to determine whether a person is a "second class citizen" this is due to the weight and lightness of the skin of a person, contributed to the whitewashing of communities. Life projected from the american Filipino community to the Philippines is very different from the life in the united states.
