The West was the first internationally-known contestant show that involved singing - American Idol. The purpose and hope of this show, I believe, was the cause to it's success. The show allowed singers from anywhere, regardless of socio-economic status, to compete for the prize. It was only based on what you give to the stage and how the Judges interprets the performance. These shows made ordinary people celebrities such as, Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson.
The American Idol created it's own shifting culture, which gave birth to "The Voice" and "X-Factor". Soon this phenomenon spread internationally to Europe countries, then Asian Countries. Many of the Northeast Asian countries gave a decent quality show, but third-word countries tried to mimic and was not quite successful.
The show allowed any contestants from all over the Vietnam region who wished to become a professional singer. This was an attempt to bring western-influenced popular culture to the market. Vietnamese was trying to modernize it culture through youths and young adults between the ages 18-30. However, while doing so they simultaneously tried to incorporate other geo-cultures like the Japan and Korea.
This effort was not successful because they did not see the country as its own. Vietnam, compared to the two asian countries mentioned, were extremely poor and had different priorities and cultural beliefs. The hegemonic power tried to group the Asian groups together hoping they would collide and make a smooth transition to western popular culture.
The root of the problem, when it pertains to Asian descent is, this wide category is composed of several little ethnic groups when different values, belief, language, history, traditions, etc. Every asian group must be researched in depth and treated accordingly to bring the best outcome.
