merchants of cool
In the documentary that was watched, the narrator tells of how the teen market is a huge market and the business men are going after it. the ones pointed out were mtv and also sprite and many other companies. they used what the teenagers liked against the teenagers and would advertise at every corner and do studies to have see what would make them buy more of the the companies products. it showed how the markets would try to target cool but would be unsuccessful because cool is something that is always changing there is something new always happening in the teens world. so the companies would try new efforts to be one step ahead of the teens or try to take advantage of the cool things at the time. they would bring in normal kids in order to blend more with the teen population. they would introduce new bands and pay teens to listen to the groups just to try to incorporate themselves into the teens cool lifestyle. the cool lifestyle would develop differently based on gender. the boys would look up to these different characters that were set up and well the girls were given Brittney spears to look up to and the midriff of their stomach showing. the lives of the tv show characters were becoming those of every day kids through things like spring break. the teens idolized people from Dawson's creek and it caused a height in sexual normality in the younger population. the companies took what they could from teens to make money.
