This article addresses the issues of how pop culture of a large nation affects the culture of another

a third world nation through colonialism. Vietnam Idol is a show that has adopted western traits

mixing it with Vietnam value and culture. In this show, we notice the similarities and differences

between Vietnam culture and Western culture. In the similarities we see that Vietnam Idol is a

product of trans-nationalism between Vietnam and Western culture. In the differences we see how

"behind" and underdeveloped Vietnam is compared to the Western world, but it is also through

the show that modernism may be introduced to the Vietnam culture. With all the mixing and fusing

of western influences and technology, the question is: What makes Vietnam culture authentic?

It is to our understanding that culture is not a set idea and that it is constantly changing; however,

every culture is define in some way that makes it what it is even if it has been influenced by other

cultures. With the new influences, what makes Vietnamese culture Vietnamese?
