4/18/17 Filipino Nation in Daly City.
Brandy Zeng
This article described the immigration of Filipinos from the Philippines to the United States. There are large concentrations of Filipino communities in the Bay Area, especially in Daly City, because it is such a small city in comparison. This article talks about how Filipinos try to fit in to American society, but still celebrate their own culture, with all the Filipino restaurants, movies, and communities. They seem to all be upper middle class, but there is a hidden lower class. I thought it was really interesting how the average Filipino household income was higher than the average white income, but it was only because Filipino households usually are larger and have more people earning income.
I think the ideas in this article relate to now how still, many immigrants to the United States still feel like they need to conform to the American culture, and they forget about their own native culture. This leads to a loss of culture and diversity. They try to keep themselves from standing out, because it is seen as weird and different. Like stated in the article, many second generation children of immigrants disrespect their elders because they think they are different, and many don't speak the same languages, so communication is difficult. It is important for people to learn about their own cultures and backgrounds because it helps teach people to respect others differences.
