The issue of monolingual people is prevalent in many cultures. When one is not able to communicate with others they can often feel excluded or ostracized. This shouldn’t be an issue because it is so easily fixed. I feel that it is extremely important for children in grade school to learn how to speak the language that their peers speak. Not being able to make friends at a young age can cause serious psychological damage to a child that can last their entire life. Communication is a necessary skill in order to be successful in life.
Proposition 227 regarding the monolingual schools is not a good solution to any issue. The children who only speak Lao will forever be secluded to hang out with themselves because they will be the only people who understand each other. Bilingual schools (especially in areas where there are high volumes of immigrants) and essential in the transition of second generation immigrants in order to socialize with the kids who are from America to further diversify the community.

This paper reminds me of the video shown in class because most of the parents could not speak a drop of english. The kids even had to translate for the parents when on camera. From the reading I know that the teachers often needed their students to stay with the parents during parent teacher conferences in order to translate for the parents. This can be very hard on the kids because they might not be good at english since they probably only speak their native language at home. With bilingual programs in schools the kids will be able to emphasize their linguistic talents and strengthen them as well.
