Weapons of the Week and Race Rebels
Race Rebels particularly stood out to me out of the two readings because of realities it mentions and talks about regarding the working class and its daily struggles. In addition to be a student at UC Davis, I also work part-time as a delivery driver for UC Davis Vet Med: Central Services, which makes me a part of the working class as well. As a delivery driver, I am unsupervised for a majority of my shift since I am mostly on my own, going building to building with a van loaded with packages. Overall, I consider myself to be underpaid and overworked by my job so I too try to find ways to get around the system to my advantage just like the McDonald's employees that Kelley talks about in his piece. I've had my job since last February and yet, I find myself constantly trying to find new ways to "rebel" so that I don't have to work as hard while getting away with it. Since my job is also quite labor intensive like that of the slaves/peasants Scott mentions in his piece, I oftentimes purposely come in to work late, deliver packages at slow pace, use my phone for extended periods of time instead of working, take a nap in the van, ignore specific delivery requests, feign ignorance, etc. Due to the fact that I am currently a member of the "working class" for the time being, I can deeply understand and relate to the silent rebellions that are mentioned in these two readings.
