Before reading this article, I was not aware of the influence of hip-hop in Filipino-American culture. I thought it was interesting how the article defines culture as 'flexible' and stemming from the lived experiences of people. I believe that this definition is important because it differentiates misappropriating culture to rearticulating a culture. Filipino DJs are creating their own Filipino-American hip-hop culture that is substantially different from African-American DJs due to the difference of their racialization in the United States. With this in mind, Filipino-Americans are able to establish their own identity in American culture.
The ability to create an identity in a seemingly stagnant American culture is important to me because of my position as someone who is Filipino but does not fully identify with Filipino-American culture or American culture. Although I do not identify with the Filipino-American DJs and their hip-hop culture, I understand the importance of agency and creating space to allow for multiple identities to form and live within a diverse community.
