Djing as a Filipino thing
In the chapter, "Djing as a Filipino thing" the author introduces the Filipino community and its interest in hip hop culture. In white culture and some Asian cultures, Filipinos face discrimination and oppression. Since hip hop is created by the Black community, a community that is oppressed by white culture, the Filipino community can relate to the Black community because both parties are oppressed. The Filipino community can relate to the struggles that are written within the music, therefore finding their identity in the music. This also causes the Filipino community to love and want to create hip hop because it is a form of music that they can relate and wish to show their struggles and experiences through. The community can use this form of music especially the younger generations to show the struggles they face in life because of their ethnicity. As a minority in the states, Asian Americans are a forgotten minority at times, grouped as one while there are many. Filipinos are just one in the large pool of Asian Americans. As one of the forgotten minority, hip hop can be an outlet, a way to get their voice out in the world. It is a way to express themselves and for the younger generations to find a sense of identity by conveying their life and culture. While using hip hop to express themselves, they have respect for the music and its rules. Hip hop id the music of the oppressed and sometimes forgotten minority, it is an outlet to convey the struggles of the everyday lives of these minorities.
