Boyd and Dominguez - 06/06
Boyd's article was insightful. I thought that their use of 'irony's' double-edge was clever because of how literal the movement could have been taken, as a joke, to prolong its existence in the mainstream and allow its subversive criticisms go on. This article made me realize how important emotional effect is to the success of activism and other forms of cultural resistance. "Memes" are a great way of resisting hegemony due to its ability to be humorous, easily accessible, and relatable. "Modern memes", images with text, are something that I've taken for granted, in terms of its evolution. I remember when these text memes were only made for the purpose of humor with no politics. However, with the availability of the internet and the creation of an "ironic" youth culture, memes have become one of the main ways that youth are able to criticize popular culture and infect mainstream's genetic code.
