“From Khush List to Gay Bombay: Virtual
Webs of Real People.” Sandip Roy
In this article Sandip Roy examines the
LGBT community in South Asia, and specifically focuses on the internet’s impact
in this community. He points out that much has changed, but at the same time
there are still limitations. One way that has helped the South Asian LGBT
community transcend these limits, is the online community. The
interconnectedness that the internet has allowed for many also applies to these
people.
With such benefits there must also
be downsides. Some of the baggage that he touches on is the idea of “keyboard”
activism and losing sight of the fact that grassroots organizing still has to
be done on the “ground” or in other words out in the real life public. While so
much can be done on the internet nowadays, we must acknowledge that actual
groups, while it may be more difficult, must be created as well. Ultimately
while the Internet can be used as a tool for “activism,” it must be used
constructively in conjunction with the real world in order to effectively help
the movement and bring about change.
