Laotian
Daughters for May 16 Blog
In
this article “Laotian Daughters” by Bindi V. Shah, the author addresses the problem
of second generation Laotians as they find themselves struggling through their
identity of being a Laotian. Furthermore, they experienced in many political turmoil
and is hard to distinguish themselves from rest of Asians because, for them, it
is easier to accept as either Chinese, Filipino, or Vietnamese. The geographic boundaries
making many Laotians hard to differentiate themselves. What’s even more,
younger generations find themselves more comfortable as saying they are “American”.
Some younger generations even experience language problems as they cannot
communicate to their elderlies. The focus of this article is perhaps the gender
awareness of Laotian daughters. They must listen to their moms and their
parents will require us to do chores because she will not find a good husband,
if not helping out. Second generation Laotian women are also very concentrated
on education and eager to be themselves. Since many of them rebel against their
parents, it draws a cultural conflict amongst Laotian group.
