Americanization. Westernization. Assimilation.
The influence that American popular culture has over the rest of the world's other cultures is so strong. Scarily strong. It's like, if you don't keep up with the Kardashians, you'll be left behind economically, politically, militarily, socially - you name it!
- How did America become this influential? Like, really? It could have been any other country had history run its course differently. But this is how it is.
This excerpt reminded me of the Filipino counterparts of American/Western game shows and reality shows that I watch at home. We have Pilipinas Got Talent, The Voice - Philippines, Pinoy Big Brother, and Family Feud to name a few shows. The production quality of the shows - filming, stage design, lighting, etc. - is less than that of shows here in America. We don't have the same quality of resources in the Philippines as we do here. One thing that I found extremely different between Filipino and American TV shows, also, was the amount of audience participation and how unscripted the shows can sometimes get. In this way, I think it makes the hosts more relatable and seem more like real people. In a way, this shows the values of the country and its people. We in the Philippines really emphasize family bonds and relationships and this becomes apparent in the shows.
