Shah -Laotian Daughters: Working toward Community, Belonging, and Environmental Justice

I believe that what Shah talks about in her article can be related to many other ethnicities, not just Laotian. Shah emphasizes how ethnicity, gender, and inter generations, all become sites of struggle and negotiation for power. In the case of Laotians, Shah believes that the parents who faced trauma and powerlessness during their time in their past homes have a lingering feeling of subordination and weakness. To avoid those feelings, they focus on what they do have control on, which is their children. This gives them a stronger sense of worth, especially when keeping control of what their daughters do and how they carry themselves.
