Laotian Daughters/ monkey dance

In the reading, there is issues that immigrants and second generations face within american society.  the reading covers an issue that happened with chevron and information given to the community of the impending dangers that were happening. this led to the communities second generation to rise and start committees in order to confront the injustices that happened after the chevron incident. The incident had a lot of issues for the community. the lack of phone calls when the incident occurred or  the lack of having other languages spoken on a phone in order to communicate the dangers better. The community is of immigrants and their descendants which means that not all of them speak English and they may be below the  poverty line.the lack of communication and ability to get out of the neighborhood in which they live in. when the school was affected by the chevron incident the students weren't allowed to leave for a while. In these communities the lack of ability to leave, it causes the individuals to be trapped. However the younger generations have figured how to break this and allows the individuals to expand and grow the community from within by showing the society that they cant be screwed over or silenced. By forming committees and making their voices heard, they made sure to make their words and issues heard.

In Monkey Dance, the culture of the immigrants is kept by the younger generations. In the film they choose to embrace the culture and incorporate it into their daily lives, the boys integrated dance moves into their gymnastics and modern dance into the cultural dance. they also try their best in order to succeed in life, to graduate and to do better than their siblings.
