Vietnam Idol
Vietnam was following the trend of singing reality shows when they decided to make Vietnam Idol. The fact that they are taking something that was so successful in America and trying to bring it to Vietnam seems borderline appropriation. What I mean by this is that Americans have benefited greatly from reality TV -- people have even made their careers about it (Keeping Up with the Kardashians). Vietnam (along with many other countries) saw this success and decided to try and bring it to their own country. I understand that this is not entirely appropriation since reality TV is not technically a part of American culture, but we are definitely known for it here. This just proves that any country can be guilty of appropriation.
Secondly, the producers of Vietnam sings did not think about why it was so successful in America. Americans go on American Idol to get famous -- some of the contestants aren’t even good at singing. The audition lines are days long. People just want the slightest chance to make it on TV. They will do outrageous things not even related to singing to just get recognized. Vietnam people seem to be less interested in sob stories and the only contestants who audition and make it are people who are good at singing. Yes this should probably be the point to a competitive singing reality show but it doesn’t have that interesting hook to reel the audience in like American Idol does.
