Globalization and the Public Cartographies of Vietnam Idol

Vietnam’s culture has been influenced by the wave of globalization. For instance, the idol culture, which were not presentable, now becomes more prevailing in Vietnam. This was not soon after the introduction of Britain’s pop idol and famous American Idol. In America, Idol means a “exceptionalism” or “meritocracy”. However, in Vietnam, things get a little different than America. In Vietnam, idolism meaning there’s an opportunity of being “honored”. Also in the article, the author suggests that Vietnam has a relatively immature consumer market in which many idol is offering “modern reality.” Thus, Idol is overly glorified as the “dreams” come true and make “music stars shine” stating in the article. This also indicts Vietnamese people are unable to tell from this “realism”. Vietnam idol receives less circulation and prestige because the economic model of media is way different than westerns. This idol movement also represents a new “colonialism” as transnationalism shapes a bring back the image of “global village”.
