DJing as a Filipino Thing
This Article describes how the history of DJing is mostly black and how Filipino youth try to fit into this group. It is hard for them because they have little relations to the Puerto Rican and African American cultures, geographically, historically, and ethnically. They have to find their own ways to fit in and be successful, mostly by using their own pasts and experiences with Djing starting from a young age. They believe that DJing and other related activities are a worldwide activity, and people from everywhere around the world have their own styles. It brings people together and adds to the racial diversity.
I think that it is really cool that Filipinos are trying to do something that does not have origins from their culture because it shows that cultures are blending and there is more diversity. The article describes how Filipino youth in the Bay Area are getting into DJing and hip hop, and I have seen a lot of this myself, from dance teams and groups at my high school. Many students starting dancing and working with music starting from a young age and they are really good at it. In a way, DJing has formed itself into the Filipino culture and they are being recognized for it. As Asian Americans, they often get confused with Chinese or Japanese Americans and with DJing, they distinguish themselves and has opened up Filipino visibility.
