DJing as a Filipino Thing

The prevalence of DJing in the Filipino community is an example of how immigrants and their children blend American culture with their own. Filipinos wanted to both assimilate with mainstream American society, while not losing their own cultural heritage. As a result, they co opted hip hop to distinguish themselves as something unique: Filipino Americans. Although I believe most immigrants, in some way, assimilate both their own culture and American culture into their lives. Filipino American youths, however, made a significant change to their own culture and made a place for themselves in American society

This also shows that hip hop has shifted from being underground to mainstream. Although it has been strongly identified with African Americans and Puerto Ricans, it became more inclusive and widespread of all others over the years. It is a prime example of cultural meanings changing over time, and how they can influence other cultures. .
