In this first reading, a monologue called Assimilation, written by Shish Kurup, is about his family immigrating to the US and trying to assimilate into their culture. Many aspects they fit in, like they love the fast food, its way easier than getting food in their home country, where he everything is fresh. He doesn't like seeing the chickens being killed, and he thinks its so much more convenient that the burgers are pre-made. But many stereotypes about America also concern him, like marijuana and streaking.
The second article, Heterogeneity, Hybridity, Multiplicity: Asian American Differences, by Lisa Lowe is her explanation about the different kinds if Asian American groups. "Heterogeneity", "hybridity", and "multiplicity" are all words she uses to describe the different generations, origins, class backgrounds, and economic conditions of Asian Americans in the US. She talks about how when Asian Americans immigrate to America, there is a loss go original culture in exchange for American culture. They all start acting the same, even thought they're all different. She uses an example of two Asian American girls, and how this one girl feels embarrassed because she feels like the other Chinese girl is more cultured than she is, but in reality, the other girl was second generation, and adopted by Caucasian parents, so she is actually segregated from her Chinese culture.
