From Assimilation & Immigrant Acts For May 11th

In the article From Assimilation by Shishir Kurp, the author talks about his family’s experience in moving to America with the fear of myths. For example, he worries about marijuana and being difficult to understand Americans. But also, he was eager to seek liberty as he saw the Statue of Liberty. At first he was experiencing a serious of racial discrimination by being called, “Tazan”, and some people were very rude at him. He experienced a categorizing experience of different races of people, such as Arabs are being recognized as “Banyanis” or just to make moiney. Yet after 20 years, the author identified himself finally as becoming an American as he’s being naturalized. In the article of “Immigrant Acts” by Lisa Lowe, the Author first introduced a film by a Japanese American, whom denied her identity and rebelling against her traditional mother. This poem however shows discrepancies between Asian cultures  and American cultures as former generations have different values than younger generations, or second generation Americans. In the article, the author also insets the ideas that some “Chinese American” refused to their identity of being Chinese for the reason that “Chinese” were often linked with “poverty and insanity”.
