Film: "Kelley Loves Tony"

I absolutely loved this film. It was raw, real, intimate and unfiltered. It's not that I'm unaware or ignorant of these kinds of struggles, but the film just reminded me of them and how personal some of the issues were for me. Kelly's personality was very strong; she knew her dreams and aspirations and she wanted to pursue them despite her situations; she loved her family very much, which showed in the sacrifices that she made. I noticed, comparing her family to mine or others I know out there, they weren't as - maybe this part just wasn't documented or emphasized - against or upset about Kelly's pregnancy as I thought they would have been. She was still a teenager, fresh out of high school and pregnant so I was expecting a reaction from the parents more along the lines of being upset or angry. But they were supportive and even made her do traditional Laotian pregnancy remedies and such - which she wasn't that happy about but it still shows they care.
It was funny - not in the haha funny way - seeing Kelly and Tony fight or argue because it was just so typical. The way Tony tries to tell Kelly how she feels and in a way blaming her for certain things. He exhibited, to me, the typical guy mentality when guys often disregard or don't try to understand or think they understand how the woman feels. At one point he says, regarding helping out around the house, "If I was a girl I'd at least help out...". Kelly responds with "..stop expecting so much from me...". Kelly - or women in general - on the other hand, kind of exemplified to me how girls can be pretty bad at communicating sometimes and expect the guys to somehow read their minds and understand how they feel. It's pretty crazy how things are between guys and girls sometimes - I really don't understand what's going on.
Towards the end, Kelly begins to regret everything she's done. She says, "There's so many things that I think about that I could have done." She wanted so much for herself, but life happened. I think she handled things pretty maturely actually, especially for being so young. I just realized that I'm older than she was in the film!
The film just goes to show that Asian Americans don't have just the generational struggle as their main struggle. We're all also affected by things like teen pregnancy.
