Laotian daughters

the article of Laotian daughters conveys the issues of identity that the younger Laotian girls face growing up in the Laotian communities in the united states. they face identity issues in the community, as girls and as Asian Americans. the girls face issues from the pressures implemented by their family and communities. such things such as how they are supposed to be in life as a girl, their responsibilities in life, and who they are supposed to date or marry. this appears in multiple cases through actions within a household and how they are supposed to present themselves to the world. in the household the girls are supposed to cook and clean while their brothers are allowed to do what ever and not expected to do any of the chores around the house. when they leave the house they have to be fully covered and if they wanted to wear something else they would have to hide it under the clothes they leave with and change before coming home. if they are sexually active they are called bad girls and well if they follow all of their cultural rules then they are good girls. there is also a pressure from parents in their dating lives they are not supposed to date anyone out of their own race, their parents encouraged dating Laotian  boys to keep with the culture and to keep the Laotian lines going. if they get pregnant at a young age then to the community their life is pretty much over since they have to take care of the child 24/7 by themselves normally. as a girl the expectation is high in the culture and that can mess with your identity because you know who your community wants to to be but do you really know yourself and what you want to do with your life outside of the community.
